Helms College goes above (and abroad) to provide students with every opportunity to expand their knowledge, build character and open their eyes to their full potential. One way is by offering students a chance to “study away” where they experience the hands-on instruction Helms College is known for — but in culinary destinations all over the world.
This summer, Chef Kristina Dahl, Director of Hospitality and Culinary Education, led a group of eight students on a trip to France to better understand what culinary arts looks like on a global scale.
“We have the ability to see a different approach to education and, at the same time, experience some things that are similar to our way of life here in the United States,” Dahl said.
Chef Dahl and the students saw the Mediterranean Sea, Notre Dame Cathedral, Eiffel Tower and more. They also participated in several cooking classes, wine tastings and tours. These group activities are special because the students build connections over their shared passion for culinary.
Although the courses that go along with this trip are culinary related, students do not have to be a part of the culinary program to go. This trip is also meant to open students' eyes to how the hospitality industry plays a role in other industries as well.
Understanding what service means and learning new ways to embody that in a career and in one’s personal life is another important aspect Chef Dahl hopes the students gain from the trip.
“I believe this gives all students an opportunity to see the impact they can have on others not only in our local communities, but around the world,” she said. “I hope that this helps students find other ways that they can engage in service learning throughout their future.”
The students who participated in this trip were able to experience a new culture both inside and outside of the culinary classroom, while building friendships that will last a lifetime. Key to the trip’s success is great professors who are passionate about providing students the chance to broaden their horizons, while learning about something much bigger than themselves.
